Children's Home
Kutsukake Gakuso Children's Home is located in Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture, northwest of Tokyo. Here, thirty children aged nought to eighteen and who are unable to live with their parents or relatives due to neglect, abuse or other family problems, live together with 34 members of staff, in several family units of 6 children to 2-3 members of staff.
Children in need of accommodation are taken to the home from child guidance centers in the whole of Tokyo. Their psychological state and behaviour are often seriously problematic. Reasons for accommodation include: neglect or abuse; abandonment by parent(s); parent with mental disorder; parents unable to cope with raising child; unhealthy family environment such as gang membership; juvenile delinquency; physical abuse of family members by child; child not enrolled for compulsory schooling.
As much independence as possible is given to the children, for example in getting up, eating and cleaning. The staff members believe it is a fundamental requirement for children's recovery to give them a daily life abundant in mutual trust, kindness and love. The staff members hope that the children will have confidence in themselves, and that they will enter society with respect for friendship.
